The perfect fit

Great workplace cultures can be built, improved upon and should be celebrated and shared

- JOURNAL STAFF REPORT

The Albuquerque Journal and Business Outlook are pleased to announce the opening of nominations for the 2020 Top Workplaces awards and rewards program for businesses and organizations throughout New Mexico.

The rewards part of it is an ideal opportunity to gauge the health of your organization. It also is a chance to learn from the hundreds of participants, share insights to improve and even be part of the process to encourage new companies and groups to join each year.

The program is a perfect way to also recognize employees and for employees to recognize mentors and leadership and for companies to distinguish themselves.

The Journal and its research partner Energage last year invited more than 1,000 businesses and organizations to get involved, doing in-depth surveys with almost 70, finally recognizing the top 50 at a gala luncheon. Almost 24,000 employees were surveyed.

Organizations recognized in third-party surveys such as Top Workplaces, can attract more highly qualified personnel and develop lower turnover rates, according to Energage research.

That is a critical attribute in today’s business environment with historically low unemployment and stiff competition for qualified workers.

“Our research shows organizations that earn the award attract better talent, experience lower turnover and are better equipped to deliver bottom-line results,” Doug Claffey, founder of Energage, previously told the Journal. “Their leaders prioritize and carefully craft a healthy workplace culture that supports employee engagement.”

Here are the parameters:

■Any organization with 35 or more employees in New Mexico is eligible to participate, whether they public, private, non-profit, government.

■ Workplaces are evaluated by their employees using a short 24-question survey.

■ Companies will be surveyed during December to February.

■ Energage conducts Top Workplaces surveys for 50 major metro newspapers and surveyed more than 2 million employees at more than 7,000 organizations in 2019.

■ Nomination deadline: Jan. 17, 2020

The Top Workplaces will be featured in a special Business

Outlook edition next year and honored at a gala luncheon accompanied by an on-site daylong hiring fair.

The previous Top Workplaces, came from Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Santa Fe to Taos, Hobbs, Alamogordo and Santa Ana Pueblo. They represented health care, schools, financial services, auto repair and dealerships, fitness businesses, real estate, architects, banks and credit unions, counseling and highway supply, accounting and restaurants, tearooms and call centers, and on and on.

Some of the superlatives from employees surveyed among last year’s winners include:

■ “Decisions are made based on member impact and the bottom line is not the primary focus. People who work here are generally passionate about helping our members and our community.”

■ “I have the ability to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives every day.”

■ “Have never worked in a place that makes you feel so welcome and needed.”

■ “I really enjoy coming to work because it’s a very positive environment to be in! I love what I do and enjoy learning new things, but especially spending time with the students because they are an important part of our community and our lives.”

■ “This job allows me to work to my strengths. I am able to balance work and personal life with my work setting. I love the people that I work with, they are all supportive.”

■ “Every day is different, challenging and exciting.”

■ “I am able to do what I love and grow.”

■ “I enjoy my co-workers, team work and making the job fun. I look forward to coming to work everyday for another new adventure. Having management understand and support our team is a huge factor.”

■ “Every person I have interacted with is so helpful and happy to help teach me something new. I have never felt discouraged or dreaded coming into work. I truly feel like I am making a difference in others lives even without presently meeting them face to face.”

There is something special about finding a job, a company, an organization where you genuinely enjoy going to work every day and even putting in extra hours sometimes.
