UNM IS NOT doing away with football. Unlike soccer, after all of the numbers were finalized for the 2018 season and even with low attendance, AD Eddie Nuñez reported that UNM football showed a profit (presumably from Mountain West Conference revenue along with the body bag game vs. Wisconsin). For the incoming coach, he will play two body bag games in 2020 against Mississippi State and USC. The cash will be flowing; will UNM have any healthy players left to play NMSU after those two games?

AD NUÑEZ: FINDING a suitable coach might be as easy as the formula that former AD Gary Ness used. Gary had an internal search for successful JC coaches who had success and had no NCAA violations. Advantage: Not spending lots on a head hunter. He found Coach Dennis Franchione who turned our Lobo program around in a huge way. Just use good old common sense and a little honey to find the right fit. Go Lobos!

CURIOUS AS TO why Bob Davie has never provided more details regarding his medical incident. As a public figure and someone who appeared to be in good shape, it seems like a missed opportunity to improve public awareness regarding heart health and risk factors. — RG1

WOW, I CAN’T believe everyone wants to replace the football team with a soccer team. Where were you when they had one? No one is ever happy with a head coach. How about some blame on the assistant coaches maybe they are not doing a good job? Would you be happy with a coach that went 2-25? Who do expect to get or who would you like to see hired?

I AGREE THAT we should drop football and join the West Coast Conference (of course, they would have to invite us). And the alternative for building a multi million dollar socceronly stadium for New Mexico United with state funds - use University Stadium! A beautiful grass playing field with seating capacity for 30,000 fans. A win-win solution.

WAY TO GO STORM, 6A State football champions! With unwavering determination, strength and discipline, you silenced the local critics and took the 6A crown. Your defensive stand late in the fourth quarter was legendary. The entire Cleveland community is proud of you! Congratulations to the State Champions!

THE FOUR HOSTING

high schools involved in the state championship football games hit UNM with a haymaker by scheduling their games to conflict with UNM’s home game vs. Utah State. One could say “this ain’t no Alabama.” There has been much talk over the years regarding the Lobos recruiting more New Mexico kids. However, it’s a two way street. Better said from the 1967 movie “Cool Hand Luke”---”what we’ve got here is failure to communicate.”
