Shop Museum Store Sunday for eclectic, unforgettable gifts
If you’re not careful, you might miss it. Museum Store Sunday, a recent entry into the post-Thanksgiving shopping scrum, comes between Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. This year, it falls on Dec. 1, which also happens to be the day New Mexico residents get free admission to eight staterun museums.
In addition to the Museum of New Mexico Foundation Shops, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and SITE Santa Fe are also participating in Museum Store Sunday, a national event that includes 1,200 museum retail outlets. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the staterun museum shops and the O’Keeffe Museum. SITE Santa Fe is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
For those who still favor wall calendars decorated with art, stop by the gift shop at the New Mexico History Museum, where the 2020 calendars are going fast. The Palace of the Governors, which is part of the history museum, has a print shop in its courtyard. Its assortment of cards, books and posters printed on historic presses are perfect for the New Mexican who has everything.
The New Mexico Museum of Art has the usual selection of postcards, prints and posters, but it’s also got some unique jewelry and handbags that are sure to please the art lover in your life.
Looking for funky holiday cards and ornaments? Don’t miss the shop at the Museum of International Folk Art, which also features affordable earrings and other jewelry from around the world that make great stocking stuffers. While you’re up on Museum Hill, be sure to visit the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture.
SITE Santa Fe in the Santa Fe Railyard is featuring the work of jewelry artists Claudia Vallejo and K/LLER, “Wish Jars” by ceramic artist Hazy Mae, home and office gifts from Danish design HAY, not to mention calendars, journals and candy.
By doing your holiday shopping at museum stores, you’re helping to support their parent institutions, and also giving a boost to local authors and artists whose work is on sale at the shops.
