New Mexico State gives rival UTEP its first defeat of season

No. 1 Louisville clamps down on fourthrank­ed Michigan

LAS CRUCES — C.J. Bobbitt scored 14 points, including two free throws with 12.5 seconds left, and New Mexico State knocked UTEP out of the ranks of the unbeaten 59-56 on Tuesday night.

The Miners, who called a timeout with 8.8 seconds to play, got up two 3-point attempts before time ran out.

The Aggies (5-4) did not make a basket in the last 6:03 and UTEP (5-1) didn’t score from the field in the last 5:12 as the teams combined to miss their last 15 shots to go with seven turnovers. In Louisville, Kentucky, Jordan Nwora had 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Louisville held Michigan to a season-low 26% shooting mark for a victory in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in its first game since returning to No. 1.

The Cardinals (8-0) shot just 37% but their defense stifled Michigan (7-1) much of the night as they earned a signature victory one day after claiming the top spot in the AP Top 25 for the first time in six years.

No. 10 DUKE 87, No. 11 MICHIGAN STATE 75:

In East Lansing, Michigan, Vernon Carey had 26 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks to help Duke dominate Michigan State.

The Blue Devils (8-1) looked like one of the top teams in the country one a week after losing at home to Stephen F. Austin.

The Spartans (5-3) went into the game “a little fragile,” according to coach Tom Izzo, and they looked out of sync and overmatche­d.

No. 15 MEMPHIS 71, BRADLEY 56:

In Memphis, Tennessee, Alex Lomax scored 17 points, Boogie Ellis added 12 and Memphis survived a poor shooting performanc­e to beat Bradley.

Memphis made 36.1% of its shots from the field, but the Braves (5-3) hit 26.8%, including just 2 of 23 tries outside the arc.

Tyler Harris and DJ Jeffries added 10 points each for Memphis (7-1).

INDIANA 80, No. 17 FLORIDA STATE 64:

In Bloomingto­n, Indiana, Devonte Green scored a career-high 30 points and Trayce Jackson-Davis added 15, leading undefeated Indiana past Florida State in the ACC/ Big Ten Challenge.

Indiana is 8-0 for the first time since 2012-13.

M.J. Walker and Devin Vassell each scored 10 for Florida State (7-2).

No. 18 BAYLOR 78, MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE 46:

In Waco, Texas, Jared Butler made six 3-pointers and scored 20 points, Devonte Bandoo added 14 points and Baylor led throughout.

The Bears (6-1) played for the first time in nine days, since a win over then-No. 17 Villanova for the championsh­ip at the Myrtle Beach Invitation­al.

No. 19 DAYTON 99, HOUSTON BAPTIST 68:

In Dayton, Ohio, Obi Toppin scored 17 points and had a soaring, onehand slam off one of his 10 rebounds, and Dayton celebrated its return to the rankings.

The Flyers (6-1) hadn’t been ranked in the Top 25 since February 2016.

No. 24 BUTLER 67, MISSISSIPP­I 58:

In Oxford, Mississipp­i, Kamar Baldwin scored 31 points and Butler remained unbeaten with a win over Ole Miss.

Women No. 25 LSU 63, NICHOLLS STATE 32:

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Ayana Mitchell made all nine of her field goals and scored 21 points to help LSU beat Nicholls State.

Khayla Pointer had nine points, seven assists and six rebounds for LSU (8-1), which has won seven straight. The Tigers entered holding teams to 55.9 points per game.
