These mittens rule when gloves won’t do

Durable and warm, these models make up for the diminished dexterity

- Stephen Regenold writes about outdoors gear at gearjunkie.com.

When it’s too cold for gloves (generally around 10 degrees,) a good pair of mittens is crucial to enjoying wintertime activity. Sure, you sacrifice a bit of dexterity for cozy digits, but that’s the price of warmth in the rock-bottom cold months of the year.

There are many mittens to pick from in the outdoors market. These three mitten models are some of my favorites: two high-end options and a budget choice.

BLACK DIAMOND MERCURY MITT

($110): I think of these mitts as cocoons for the hands. They’re stuffed with PrimaLoft insulation for warmth and have leather on the palms. A “trigger finger” that separates your index finger from the rest increases dexterity.

Black Diamond built these mitts for mountaineering and serious winter pursuits. A waterproof insert keeps the hands dry in all conditions. Inside, a high-loft fleece lining adds to the warmth.

MARMOT EXPEDITION MITTENS

($115): These mega-mitts are wonderfully warm and made for Mount Everest climbers and South Pole scientists. They are puffy, Prima Loft-stuffed mitts that have kept our hands toasty in extreme temps as low as minus 30 degrees.

But there’s a caveat: The abundant insulation creates a mitt that lacks dexterity — you can grip a ski pole, but anything much more precise is difficult.

I’ve worn one model of these mittens since 2007. They are built to last. Buy these if you need an uber-warm mitt that will last for years.

ICEARMOR MITTEN ($40): Looking for a mitten that won’t break the bank? Then you need to check out the

IceArmor Mittens. A favorite among ice fishers, these mittens offer a roomy fit and are easy to get on and off.

The mittens’ 150g Thinsulate Insulation keeps fingers toasty. And the waterproof, windproof membrane means you’ll stay dry and warm no matter the conditions.

These mittens don’t allow for much dexterity or fine movement, but that’s not what they’re meant for — the IceArmor Mittens are designed to keep fingers warm and be taken off quickly when you get a big one on the line.

For just $40, they’re by far the warmest bargain mitten around.
