Alabama gives Auburn its first loss

Seton Hall rallies to set back No. 5 Butler

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Kira Lewis Jr. scored 25 points as Alabama gave No. 4 Auburn its first loss of the season with an 83-64 rout Wednesday night.

The Crimson Tide (9-7, 2-2 SEC) led wire-to-wire over their in-state rival.

The loss by the Tigers (151, 3-1) left No. 7 San Diego State (18-0) as the nation’s last unbeaten team.

It was Alabama’s first win over a Top 5 team since a 79-57 home defeat of then-No. 5 Texas A&M on Dec. 30, 2017.

5 BUTLER 70: In Indianapol­is, Myles Powell scored 19 of his 29 points in the second half and Romaro Gill matched his career high with 17 points to lead Seton Hall back from a 10-point halftime deficit for a victory at Butler.

The Pirates (13-4, 5-0 Big East) closed the game on a 13-4 run to win their seventh in a row. They are the only conference team still unbeaten in league play.

Kamar Baldwin had 19 points and six assists to lead the Bulldogs (15-2, 3-1).

No. 2 BAYLOR 68, IOWA

STATE 55: In Waco, Texas, Davion Mitchell had 17 points, scoring just before and after halftime, as Baylor started stretching its lead in a victory over Iowa State. It was BU’s 13th straight win. Baylor (14-1) is the only Big 12 team to make it through the first four conference games without a loss.

Rasir Bolton and Prentiss Nixon both had nine points for Iowa State (8-8, 1-3 Big 12). No. 9 FLORIDA STATE 54, VIRGINIA 50: In Tallahasse­e, Fla., Devin Vassell scored 18 points, including a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws in the final seconds, as Florida State won its eighth straight game.

Anthony Polite came off the bench to drill four 3-pointers for the Seminoles (15-2, 5-1 ACC), who have won 15 of their last 16. SOUTH CAROLINA 81, No. 10 KENTUCKY 78: In Columbia, S.C., freshman Jermaine Couisnard hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer as South Carolina rallied from 14 points down in the second half to beat Kentucky.

Couisnard had a career-high 26 points, including his gamewinner that banked in for the Gamecocks (9-7, 1-2 SEC).

TEMPLE 65, No. 16 WICHITA STATE 53: In Philadelph­ia, Quinton Rose scored 19 points and Temple used a strong defensive performanc­e to upset Wichita State. GEORGETOWN 83, No. 25

CREIGHTON 80: In Washington, Omer Yurtseven had 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Mac McClung scored 19 points as Georgetown beat Creighton. UNLV 98, SAN JOSE STATE

87: In Las Vegas, Nev., Marvin Coleman had 17 points to lead six Rebels in double figures as UNLV (10-9), 5-1 MWC) beat San Jose State (6-13, 2-5). AIR FORCE 85, BOISE STATE

78: In Air Force Academy, Colo., Lavelle Scottie scored 21 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the field as Air Force (9-9, 3-3 MWC) defeated Boise State (11-8, 3-4).

NMSU-UTAH VALLEY: The New Mexico State men (12-6, 3-0) begin a three-game road swing in defense of their Western Athletic Conference title Thursday night in Orem, Utah, vs. Utah Valley (7-11, 1-2).

The Aggies are seeking their 22nd consecutiv­e conference win since losing at Cal Baptist, 82-76, on Jan. 3, 2019.

Trevelin Queen is averaging 14.8 points and 5.7 rebounds for the Aggies. Jabari Rice, a third-year sophomore guard, is putting up 12.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. He is the reigning WAC player of the week; in the 74-71 win over Kansas City, he became the first Aggie to turn a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Women

No. 2 BAYLOR 90, KANSAS

47: In Lawrence, Kan., Lauren Cox and Nalyssa Smith each scored 13 points as Baylor routed Kansas.

The Lady Bears (13-1, 3-0 Big 12) moved into first place in the conference after a loss by West Virginia earlier in the evening to Oklahoma. KU is 11-4, 0-4. OKLAHOMA 73, No. 17 WEST

VIRGINIA 49: In Morgantown, W.Va., Taylor Roberston made eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 31 points to help Oklahoma beat West Virginia.

UTAH VALLEY-NMSU: The Aggie women (5-11, 2-1) are home for a 6 p.m. game Thursday vs. Utah Valley (6-9, 3-0), the WAC leader.

Gia Pack leads NMSU with 17.1 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Jordan Holland, a 6-foot senior from Los Lunas, is UVU’s leading scorer with 10.5 points per game.
