SF ANIMAL SHELTER & HUMANE SOCIETY

Summer is here and it is a great time to adopt a new pet. While social distancing is still the norm, it is very easy to adopt a critter from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society. So, meet Wiley; he is a handsome German shepherd mix who is about 5 years old and weighs around 45 pounds. He is a friendly, happy pup and loves to go on leash walks. Wiley enjoys doggie play groups and loves to play with people. As always, if you have another dog at home, you’re more than welcome to bring them in for a Meet n’ Greet with Wiley.

Of course, sometimes a cat is more your style, so come meet

Jumanji. He is a beautiful 4-yearold short-haired cutie who was transferred from another shelter in New Mexico to find a home in Santa Fe. He is sweet, loves to cuddles and, of course, enjoys playtime. Call the shelter if you would like to meet Jumanji.

These and other animals are available for adoption from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter at 100 Caja del Rio Road. The shelter’s adoption hours during the pandemic are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. daily and are by appointment only (call 505-983-4309 to schedule an appointment.)

For updated COVID-19 shelter policies, visit SFHumaneSociety.org. You can also follow the shelter on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Summer is a great time to enroll in some online puppy and dog education. Whether you’re training a new puppy or teaching your old dog new tricks, experts agree that sooner is better. Adopters who have recently welcomed a puppy can attend one of several virtual puppy classes that will be held online via Zoom this summer. Plus, there is a 50% off special if you adopted from any animal shelter in New Mexico. One of the classes, “Learning Games for Kids and Dogs,” will focus on different learning games designed to teach your dog fun tricks and useful skills. Kids and adults will learn about dog training basics, how your dog learns and how to improve your bond together.

“Essential Life Skills” is designed for dogs approximately 10 months and older, and will teach your pup basic good manners (such as sit, wait, attention, settle, come and walking on a leash). This course is designed for adolescent and adult dogs, but puppies can also benefit from the skills covered!

The sessions are July 12 for the puppy class and July 17 for the life skills class. For more information about online classes or to register, log on to bit.ly/sfastraining.

ESPAÑOLA HUMANE

Find unconditional love and affection in the time of COVID-19. Adopt a new furbaby from Española Humane! Merlin makes a great wizard with those tufts of fur in his ears and his expressive face. His needs are minimal: a box, a lap and a hand to smooth that fabulous fur. All of our adoptable kittens go home spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, and we have a whole bunch of kittens fresh from foster care and looking for forever!

Kingston has endured a lot of trauma in his single year on this planet — but you would never know it by his sunny outlook on life. If Kingston had a theme song, it would be “Don’t Worry, Be Happy!” Unfortunately, Kingston got out of his yard one day and was hit by a car; he broke his pelvis, shattered his shoulder and he also lost his eye, which his veterinarian replaced with a prosthetic eye. He recovered so quickly, his vet team could hardly believe it. And today? Only his false eye gives any hint of what he’s endured. Resilient and fun-loving Kingston would love a big family, a big couch, a big yard, big adventure and big love. This boy is ready to live his big life.

The shelter is closed to walkin traffic and adoptions are by appointment only; submit an application on the shelter’s website and someone from the adoption’s team will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. If you’ve recently submitted an application, you can call the reception team to schedule an appointment at 505-753-8662.
