Why mask up exercising in the great wide open?
WE DON’T envy (Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s) job during this pandemic, possibly the most significant challenge a N.M. governor has faced in decades. (We) thank (her) for being clear in (her) direction and exhibiting commitment to New Mexicans. We haven’t agreed with some of the measures (she’s) put into place, but (she has) acted decisively.
What baffles us is (her) most recent order that we must wear masks while exercising outdoors. Every other measure was logical; we could see how (she) got there. We cannot understand, however, how walking alone or as a couple or family in the Sandia Mountains, jogging in our neighborhood, or bicycling alone or strung out single file, is such a contagion threat that we now must wear masks. We assure (her) that common sense prevails amongst the hiking and biking communities; we already cross the road or step aside to keep our distance.
The only legitimate reason to continue and to pile on more harsh restrictions on just about every aspect of our lives is if indeed these measures make a difference and protect us in risky situations. Can (she) show us any evidence that walking, jogging, hiking, or biking in the great wide open of New Mexico puts us at risk? If this restriction is valid, please show us.
And remember that (she) govern(s) at the pleasure of the people of New Mexico and (does) not have the authority to deny us our constitutional and human rights without exceptionally compelling reason(s).
Please rescind the order to wear masks while exercising outdoors.
