Candidate Q&A

-

What is your position regarding climate change? What actions should Congress take, if any, regarding the environment?

YVETTE HERRELL: I believe our farmers and energy producers have been, and will continue to be, good stewards of our land, because the land is their livelihoods. We need commonsense regulations that promote that stewardship, not radical government takeovers like the Green New Deal.

XOCHITL TORRES SMALL: We need to reenter the Paris Climate Agreement, because we won’t stop climate change if we can’t stop perpetual polluters like China. We should also diversify our energy portfolio, support technology-neutral legislation to spur innovation, invest in energy transmission and storage, and include all partners in building solutions.

Do you favor or oppose a national single-payer health system?

HERRELL: Oppose. We need a free-market driven health care system. Consumers should have more options to select physicians, policy plans, premium choices, and coverage limits that work for their families and businesses and keep costs down.

TORRES SMALL: I do not support the “Medicare for All” proposal. In Congress, I have worked to make health care affordable by lowering the cost of prescription drugs and insurance premiums, improve access by increasing doctors in rural communities, expand telehealth services and provide relief to rural hospitals and clinics during COVID-19.

Do you favor or oppose limits on late-term abortion, and do you believe tax dollars should or should not be used to fund abortions?

HERRELL: I am 100% pro-life. I favor these limits and carried legislation in the New Mexico House to ban abortion after 20 weeks. I do not think taxpayer dollars should be used to fund any abortions.

TORRES SMALL: Decisions like these should be made between a woman, her family, her doctor, and her faith. Most women faced with a late-term abortion are in the midst of a medical crisis, and medical options should not be limited. Prohibiting the use of tax dollars on abortion procedures means that lowincome women … would not have access to lifesaving medical procedures.
