Pentagon Federal Credit Union to close Clovis branch

CLOVIS — The Pentagon Federal Credit Union, generally known as PenFed, will close its Clovis branch Friday.

The Clovis location had been operating as drive-thru only due to the pandemic, and will continue to do so until Friday. Those who have accounts with PenFed will still have access to them online and at local ATM locations after the closure.

No official statement of closure had been issued on the PenFed website or on the branch’s Facebook page. The only indication of closure previously was on the PenFed location search webpage. A tab for the Llano Estacado location included the line, “Permanently closing on Jan. 1.”

The Clovis location currently has four employees, according to Spencer Kenyon, manager of PenFed Corporate Communications. Kenyon added that their employees in Clovis are being given the opportunity to apply for a “remote” PenFed position.

“The decision was not easy, but was made as part of our commitment to deliver the best experience for our members. We understand that banking evolves, and it was evident in our data analysis that the consistent reduction in member traffic over these last several months at the Clovis location showed members in New Mexico were taking advantage of our online and mobile deposit channels to conduct their banking,” Kenyon said. “This decision allows PenFed to better use resources and deploy our teammates to best accommodate the entire member base.”

PenFed merged with the High Plains Federal Credit Union in 2016.
