FIGURE SKATING: In Las Vegas, Nev., dynamic Nathan Chen was nearly perfect and rather playful in winning the short program Saturday at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Saturday. Seeking a fifth straight national title, something no man has done since Dick Button from 1946-52 with seven, Chen put out the most difficult routine that any man anywhere attempts. He hit a quadruple lutz, triple axel and an excellent quad flip-triple toe loop combination in scoring 113.92 points. Also, in the pairs free skate, Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier won in their first nationals as a team. Ice dance went to Madison Hubbell and Zach Donohue for the third time. Earlier, national champion Bradie Tennell and third-place finisher Karen Chen were selected by U.S. Figure Skating for the world championships team.

OLYMPICS: Kevan Gosper, a former International Olympic Committee VP, is suggesting the United Nations might be the place to decide the fate of the postponed Tokyo Olympics. The Olympics are to open on July 23 but face mounting opposition at home as COVID-19 cases surge in Tokyo and across the globe. Japan is under emergency orders with about 4,200 deaths in the country attributed to COVID-19.
