Groups collaborate to battle racism
Black, Jewish organizations to broadcast a nationally streamed virtual event
The fight against racism continues to be a hot topic across the country.
It’s why the Jewish Federation of New Mexico and Burque Against Racism are collaborating on the virtual event, “Standing Together Against Racism: Building on our Common Heritage.” It will take place at 3:45 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 24. Registration is required at togetheragainstracismnm.org.
The nationally streamed online event will feature prominent figures in the fight against racism, and the friendship and alliance between the Black and Jewish communities.
The lineup includes Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; Dr. Susannah Heschel, daughter of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel; with perspective provided by Rabbi Capers Funnye Jr., chief rabbi of the International Israelite Board of Rabbis.
“We are honored and absolutely thrilled to be hosting this first-of-itskind event in the fight against racism,” said Rabbi Dr. Rob Lennick, CEO of the Jewish Federation of New Mexico, in a release. “It is an unbelievable opportunity to hear from both Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter along with Rabbi Heschel’s daughter, as the friendship and alliance between their fathers made a pivotal impact in the powerful fight for civil rights during the 1960s. Our hope is to reach people around
the United States with a message of unity, especially at this time of deep division in our country.”
Mike Silva is the co-founder of Burque Against Racism, which is a local coalition organization committed to fighting systemic racism.
“I look forward to this event providing people with the opportunity to listen and transform their own hearts,” Silva said. “I’m equally proud that this event is coming out of Albuquerque, a city known for standing together and standing up for those most in need.”
According to organizers, Rabbi Capers Funnye Jr., an African American rabbi, will reflect on how the legacy of the relationship between Rabbi Heschel and Dr. King should inspire Black-Jewish relations today with positive resolve for the future.
In advance of the program, local attendees will have the opportunity to pre-screen “Shared Legacies,” a film about the historical lessons of BlackJewish cooperation. Attendees must register for the event by visiting togetheragainstracismnm.org.
