Salkin leaving Lobos to work for Dolphins
Jordan Salkin, University of New Mexico’s quarterbacks coach who was hired a year ago, is leaving the Lobos to become an offensive assistant for the Miami Dolphins, UNM coach Danny Gonzales said Saturday.
Salkin, 28, worked as an offensive assistant for three seasons at Texas with UNM offensive coordinator Derek Warehime, who was the tight ends and special teams coach there.
The Dolphins have yet to hire an offensive coordinator to replace Chan Gailey, who stepped down after the Dolphins finished 10-6. Gonzales said he plans to hire a new quarterbacks coach for the Lobos in the coming weeks.
“I’m excited for Jordan as the NFL has been an aspiration of his,” Gonzales said. “Jordan did a great job for us this past year with the quarterbacks, especially considering the injuries we had at that position. He will join kicker Jason Sanders, another great Lobo with the Miami Dolphins.”
The Lobos went 2-5 this past season, winning their final two games with quarterback Isaiah Chavez, a fifthstring walk-on true freshman.
Tevaka Tuioti, who began the season as the starter, sustained a concussion late in the 39-33 loss to Hawaii, the Lobos’ second game of the season. Tuioti did not return for the rest of the season.
Backup Trae Hall suffered a rib injury in a 41-27 loss to Utah State when UNM dropped to 0-5. Then, quarterback Conor Genal went out with a broken wrist late in the first half against Wyoming. Chavez came in to lead the Lobos to a 17-16 win.
