Master Gardeners accepting applicatio­ns

Calling all green thumbs.

The Sandoval Extension Master Gardeners is now accepting applicatio­ns for the 2021 Master Gardener Program, which will be conducted partially online this year.

The program begins Feb. 2 and is scheduled to run 15 weeks. Classes will be conducted on Zoom and will constitute a college class on gardening in the High Desert climates of Sandoval County.

The program includes classes taught by area specialist­s and New Mexico State University professors. Some of the topics to be covered include: permacultu­re and sustainabi­lity; plant identifica­tion; fruit and vegetable production; tree selection and care ; and pest management. The program is open to all metropolit­an area residents.

To be certified as a Sandoval Extension Master Gardener, students must successful­ly complete the Master Gardener training. Additional­ly, students must complete a 30-hour internship that includes 10 hours of public outreach activity, and 20 hours of other community service activities.

To maintain status as a Certified Master Gardener, candidates must volunteer at least 40 hours each year, of which at least 10 hours must be earned in continuing education classes.

The cost of the program is $175. Class size is limited but there will be a waiting list once the class has been filled.
