SPORTS SPEAK UP!
OF COURSE Govie messed up the Lobos’ season from the get-go. And most everybody agrees that Paul Weir is a good person. Hopefully, the same as former coach Ritchie McKay, he will have success at another university. It just won’t be at UNM. Weir said the loss to San Jose State was ‘on me.’ If he had his players scrimmage between games, then it definitely was on him. Regardless, his team was listless and completely spent in the second half. As for the once proud slogan “We Are New Mexico”? Well, we were New Mexico.

PAUL WEIR has always been one to accept full responsibility for the Lobos woes, but in doing so may be giving Nuñez reason to make a change. Money is always a consideration. While Weir has considerable coaching experience, he is short on head coaching experience. Defections are never a good sign. Nuñez has some difficult decisions to make.

I HAVE a new found respect for Coach/ Dr. Weir after Saturday’s loss! He told the truth (team lost due to a lack of effort) and he took responsibility (“Today is on me”). That, a la Rocky Long and more recently Coach Gonzalez, is how you build relationships with your players, fans and even the media! Without honesty and accountability there can be no progress!

ONE OF my most treasured pieces of sports memorabilia is a baseball autographed by the immortal Hank Aaron. I got it from another immortal, Rich Alday. I will never recognize Barry Bonds as the All Time Home Run leader as he was a cheater. RIP Hank and Rich. — RC
ON THURSDAY the Lobos beat the worst team in the conference. Then Saturday San Jose St beat the worst team in the conference. Never in my lifetime did I ever think I’d witnesses the program as bottom feeders. Paul Weir taking the Lobos to the next level, the LOWEST level!

THE BEST offense for Lobo bball opponents is when UNM is in its leavethe-other-team’s-best-3-pt-shooterwide-open defense. Go Lobos! — Covido
