Lobos finish 3rd at Arizona tourney

TUCSON — Led by a pair of Lobos tying for fifth place. the University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished third of 17 teams in its season opener at the Arizona Intercolle­giate, which wrapped up Wednesday.

Host Arizona, one of six Pac12 schools in the field, won with a 2-under 852. The Lobos, at 16-over 868, came in behind Wake Forest (plus-4 856). Lobo junior Sam Choi and sophomore Albert Boneta finished tied for fifth at 1-over par 214.

New Mexico State finished last in the field at 53-over 905, though the Aggies shot even-par 284 on the final round. The top Aggie finisher was Albuuqerqu­e’s Aidan Thomas (12-over-par 225, tied for 53rd).

Both the Aggies and Lobos return to action Feb. 14-16 at the All-American Intercolle­giate hosted by Houston in Humble, Texas.
