APD arrests man accused of raping a 5-year-old boy last year
The Albuquerque Police Department has arrested a man they say filmed himself raping a 5-year-old boy last year.
Joshua Vigil, 29, is charged with criminal sexual penetration of a child, criminal sexual contact of a child, three counts of manufacturing visual medium of sexual exploitation of children, and possession of visual medium of sexual exploitation.
It’s unclear if he has an attorney.
The investigation started in early January when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children notified APD Crimes Against Children detectives that a user had uploaded photos to
Google that showed children being sexually abused.
A detective reviewed the photos and found the email address linked to the account was Vigil’s, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court.
He found Vigil’s address and showed the photos to Vigil’s mother, who identified the child as the son of a friend, according to the complaint.
Detectives talked to the friend, who said Vigil was a “father figure” in her son’s life and her son would frequently stay the night at his house. She said she would assist with the investigation and not allow Vigil around her son or any other children.
An arrest warrant was filed Jan. 14 and Vigil was booked into the county jail on Wednesday.
