Stocks closed broadly higher on Wall Street Thursday, helping the market recoup some of its losses a day after its biggest pullback in nearly three months. The S&P 500 rose 36.61 points, or 1%, to 3,787.38, lifting the benchmark index out of the red for the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1% and The Nasdaq composite rose 0.5%. Investors continued to closely watch the wild swings in GameStop, AMC and several other stocks which have become targets for online investors who have sent them skyrocketing in recent days, taking on big hedge funds who bet they would fall. Markets had been meandering near record highs since last week.
