The state’s ban on abortion is there to save lives

- BY PATRICK A. SENA

Since the spring of 2020, New Mexicans have been urged to use measures to protect themselves and others from the impacts of the COVID-19. Each day, New Mexicans have seen the reports of the number of people whose lives have been tragically ended by the virus.

New Mexicans have been urging each other to practice safety measures including social distancing, sanitizing hands, wearing masks, reducing numbers in gatherings, restricting travel, and at times implementing curfews or quarantines.

New Mexicans have been reminded about the importance of these measures through presentations, posted signs, Amber alerts and electronic freeway warnings. And COVID-19 virus test centers have been in operation to help people know their status of contracting COVID-19.

The availability of the COVID-19 vaccine has been expedited, and it is here to help. Thousands of New Mexicans are being vaccinated every day. Our governor stated in her presentations that our efforts should be on saving as many lives as we can and even one death is too many. Our mantra has been, “We’re all in this together.” Great — human life is important to New Mexicans, and we clearly protect it.

But wait. In the Jan. 14 Journal, the governor of New Mexico listed her priorities for the

2021 Legislature that include eliminating the New Mexico law that bans the killing of unborn humans. In addition, House Bill 47, the (aid-in-dying) bill, has once again been submitted to the N.M. Legislature at this time when not only is COVID-19 causing many deaths, but suicides are at an alltime high.

What is happening here? Why do we want to protect human life in one area and enable the loss of human life in other areas?

It appears that it is big corporations that are attempting to shape New Mexican laws, rather than New Mexicans. As most people know, Planned Parenthood is one of a number of big corporations that lobbies lawmakers, and Planned Parenthood collects billions of dollars from U.S. taxpayers, abortions, universities, lawsuits, donations and medical institutions that do “research” using aborted fetus body parts.

And Planned Parenthood donates millions to the campaigns of lawmakers who in turn support laws that enable Planned Parenthood. Just (recently), cards were mailed by Planned Parenthood to thousands of registered Democrats asking for support for the governor of New Mexico’s priority of eliminating the New Mexico law that makes killing of unborn humans illegal. The cards say the law bans abortion care. Abortion care is like criminal execution care, isn’t it?

Furthermore, this week in New York, and likely to happen here, too, Planned Parenthood announced that it supports assisted suicide.

Do New Mexicans protect life or enable the taking of life? We have an important responsibility to support life in the legislative session.
