QB Jones hurts ankle during Senior Bowl drills

-

MOBILE, Ala. — Alabama quarterback Mac Jones injured his left ankle Thursday in a Senior Bowl practice and said he wasn’t sure of his status for Saturday’s game.

Jones didn’t finish the practice, the final one before the game. The Heisman Trophy finalist, who led the Crimson Tide to the national title, said “there’s a chance” he will sit out the game.

“I just have to see how I feel,” he said. “I’m not going to go out there if I’m not 100%. It’s not fair to my teammates to not be 100% and try to play and not play well.

“I’m going to make the decision but hopefully I can get the treatment and see how it feels.”

American team coach Matt Rhule of the Carolina Panthers said he didn’t know Jones’s status or what happened.

“He started limping at the end so I just said, ‘Why don’t you go see the trainer?’” Rhule said. “The last thing I want to do is see the kid get banged up. He was having a hard time. But he had a good day, he just had to get himself healed up.”

The other American team quarterbacks are Texas A&M’s Kellen Mond and Wake Forest’s Jamie Newman, who had transferred to Georgia before opting out.

TEXAS: Montana State head coach Jeff Choate has moved to Texas to be the team’s linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator under Steve Sarkisian.

The move was expected but wasn’t formally announced by Texas until Thursday. Choate has spent the past four seasons as head coach at Montana State, where he led the Bobcats to the FCS playoffs in 2018 and 2019. The Bobcats made the semifinals in 2019.

OKLAHOMA: Tennessee running back Eric Gray has announced on Twitter that he will play for Oklahoma, becoming the third Volunteers player to choose the Sooners in the past few weeks.

Gray gained 1,026 yards from scrimmage in 10 games for Tennessee last season and scored six touchdowns. He was the Vols’ leading rusher with 772 yards.
