Angela G. Salazar

Angela Agnes Gutierrez Salazar of Albuquerqu­e, and formerly Espanola, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2021, due to complicati­ons of COVID19 at the age of 75.

Angela was born in Embudo, NM on January 28, 1945, the youngest of three children to Ernesto and Margaret Gutierrez. She grew up in Velarde, NM. Angela received a BA from Saint Mary’s of the Springs, now Old Dominican College, in Columbus, Ohio. Angela dedicated her life to a career in education. She taught elementary school for the Espanola Public Schools and continued her education at UNM. She received a Master’s degree in Bilingual Education and was a co-author of a book published by UNM for Public Schools Bilingual Program. As a teacher, she was a leader in the Gifted Education Program in northern New Mexico. She enjoyed introducin­g her students to various performing arts to watch operas, plays, and the ballet. She later attained her Administra­tors’ Degree and was a school principal and held many other positions in school administra­tion. Angela touched many lives in the Espanola school district, San Juan Day School of the Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, Pojoaque Schools, BIA school at Dzilth-Na-ODilth-Hle, Laguna schools, and APS.

Angela loved taking care of her home and family and spent her free time sewing, cooking, and gardening. She loved learning and finding new ways to make and create things. She would sew some of the family’s clothes, including matching outfits for her children when they were young, made quilts, blankets, curtains, and pillows. She was a great cook and enjoyed trying new recipes and made food for the many holidays, birthdays, and other celebratio­ns hosted at her home in Espanola. She liked to garden and enjoyed taking care of flowering plants and vegetables. She loved all pets, especially cats, and allowed the house always to have at least one. Angela was a devout Catholic and it was important to her that the family made it to mass every Sunday.

Angela was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lourdes Gutierrez, and brother Ernie Gutierrez. She is survived by her children, son Emiliano Salazar and his wife Kyung of Albuquerqu­e, daughter Ana Lucia Moe of Albuquerqu­e, and son Miguel Salazar of New York, NY; grandchild­ren Justin Moe, Linnea Moe, Katherine Salazar, and Isaac Salazar; greatgrand­son Tenzin Moe; and former husband Arthur Salazar.

A memorial service will be held at a future date in Albuquerqu­e. The Salazar family would like to extend special thanks to Road Runner Healthcare Hospice and Sugar Hollow Assisted Living.
