Man accused of shooting at NMSP officer arrested

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — A Springer man accused of shooting at a New Mexico State Police officer last month turned himself in to State Police on Saturday, according to a news release.

Shaun Kemp, 22, was arrested by Raton police after State Police arranged for a peaceful surrender. He was booked into the Colfax County jail, and charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of evading an officer.

State Police say a gray Honda in which Kemp was a passenger fled an attempted traffic stop in Las Vegas the night of Jan. 18. When police attempted to pull over the vehicle, it sped away and blew through several intersections in an effort to elude police.

A man matching Kemp’s description jumped out of the vehicle after it stopped on Independence Road near a Farmway Feed store, and began running, police say. He allegedly turned and fired at least one shot at officer Levi Lujan, who returned fire.

No one was injured in the incident, but police say Kemp got away.

Online court records show that Kemp is already awaiting a March 16-17 trial on vehicle theft charges in 4th Judicial District Count in Mora.

He was also charged with resisting, evading and obstructing a State Police officer on Jan. 14, four days before the officer-involved shooting incident.
