Lobo volleyball wins season opener
RENO, Nev. — New Mexico rebounded from an epic openings-et loss to defeat Nevada 3-1 Friday in the Lobos’ pandemic-delayed season opener.
The 34-32 first-set defeat preceded 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 victories for UNM, which faces host Nevada in a 1 p.m. Saturday rematch. The only set longer in UNM history was a 35-33 win over St. John’s in 2008.
Kali Wolf had 18 kills for the Lobos, whose seven participating players all wore masks. The match at Virginia Street gym played out before only a small group in the stands, mostly Nevada staff and players, because of COVID restrictions.
LOBO MEN’S TENNIS: In Provo, Utah, New Mexico won its season opener 4-3 against host BYU (2-3). Rafael Abdulsalam got the clinching win in his singles match, beating Brocton Andrus 6-3.
