SPORTS SPEAK UP!

THE “CASH COW” (Lobo Basketball Fans) have left the barn and are heading to the pasture. Many will not return unless something is done about Coach Weir. The Lady Lobos have weathered the storm and have a winning season. Maybe we should start a ‘ Go-Fund-Me’ to pay the $700,000 Weir payout. I’ll be the first to put in $20.

LADY LOBOS basketball can be summarized with a song from a halfcentury ago with a No. 1 chart hit written and recorded in 1971 by Jerry Reed with these lyrics: “When you’re hot, you’re hot” (2nd half vs San Diego State 2/3/21), “when you’re not, you’re not” (1st half vs the same SDSU team 2/5/21).

I KNOW THE season is not over yet but I think we have to give Coach Weir and the kids a pass. They were dealt a terrible hand.

THE “KNOW IT ALLS” have no clue the difficult circumstances that both UNM basketball teams have had to endure thanks to the Governor. Further, you need to know that our student-athletes have explicit legal rights to privacy, and neither Coach, nor anyone connected with either team can breach those rights. You have no idea of the stressors and pressures, both academic/athletic/personal, that these students have faced this school year. Our coaches have protected their players. It is none of our business what distress anyone is suffering from, whether academic, athletic, or personal. Mind your own business.

I DOUBT a winning team would call in sick.

ALL THIS TALK about decoupling sports and education. It’s very simple; if you’re not in the classroom, you don’t play sports. We’re in the red folks.
