Always be generous with love and time

Our parents, James and Monica Gutierrez, met in college at what used to be TVI. In Mom’s words, she fell head over heels in love the first time she saw Dad … him and his ’64 Mustang Hatchback. She’s not sure if she fell in love with him or the car first. Either way, it was love and after two years, they married at only 20 years old and now they are celebrating 35 years together! It’s beautiful to think they have known more of life together, than apart.

It’s needless to say their adventures together began soon after they tied the knot. With Dad being in the Air Force, their travels across the country have been nothing short of unforgettable. Then came along the adventures of a family. Though it may have been tedious, Dad never failed to volunteer as soccer coach, Mom never forgot a Girl Scout meeting and they always attended our band concerts. Oh, and we kids can’t forget only listening to U2 on every road trip.

Now after 35 years, four children, 11 U2 concerts, two grandkids and countless ups and downs in life, the Mustang is gone, but what remains is their partnership in every decision and opportunity. They continue to support each other, laugh together and enjoy life with one another.

It’s no secret to us kids and to those who know our parents why they share long-lasting love. They love God and their family. They are always generous with their love and time — to each other and to everyone around them. That is the cornerstone of their relationship. Their shared values are the foundation that has kept them together for more than half their lives, still loving each other each and every day. We are blessed to have grown up and learned what love is through their example. Happy Valentine’s Day Mom and Dad, we love you!
