Compromise and balance

- — Gerald and Ruby Quintana

My husband Jerry and I met, on a blind date with mutual friends, in June 1960. We were both just 18 years old.

Jerry joined the Air Force a few months later and I attended college. He was stationed at the Air Force base in Colorado Springs and we saw each other often. He proposed in May 1961 and we eloped on Nov. 3, 1961. We had three children within 10 years, moved many times and lived throughout the USA.

We opened our own business together in the 1980s and worked and lived together 24/7 for 13 years (AND our marriage survived!).

A few of the things that have kept us together for the last (almost) 60 years are: compromise, keeping a sense of humor and love of our family. It’s about balance too. It’s hardly ever 50/50, it’s more like 90/10 or 70/30.

Always remember that you’re lying next to your forever best friend at the end of the day.
