Fire crews contain fire in national forest

- JOURNAL WIRE REPORTS

SACRAMENTO — A fire that started Friday night in a structure in the southern New Mexico mountain village of Sacramento spread into an adjacent national forest before crews stopped its growth overnight, U.S. Forest Service officials said Saturday.

Numerous volunteer fire departments and two fire engines set up lines around the fire, officials said. The blaze covered 17 acres on private land in addition to forest land.

Crews on Saturday mopped up and monitored the fire to ensure that fire lines kept it contained, officials said.

Sacramento is in Otero County, 24 miles east of Alamogordo.
