Los Alamos County cat diagnosed with plague
A cat in Los Alamos County has been diagnosed with plague — the first such case in the state this year, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.
A bacterial disease normally found in animals in the wild, plague can be transferred to pets through flea bites or by eating an infected animal, according to a news release from NMDOH.
The cat in Los Alamos became ill in early January and has since recovered after receiving veterinary treatment.
“NMDOH staff will conduct an environmental investigation to ensure the safety of the immediate family and neighbors,” Health Secretary-designate Dr. Tracie Collins said in a statement.
To keep people and pets safe, the department recommends people avoid sick or dead rodents and rabbits; prevent pets from hunting and roaming; avoid leaving pet food and water where rodents and wildlife can get access; clean up woodpiles, junk and such; keep hay, wood and compost piles as far from your home as possible; and have your sick pet examined by a vet.
