$5K offered for information on dog ‘left for dead’

Those who rescued him named him “Milagro,” or miracle.

But, despite their best efforts, he couldn’t pull through.

Now, Animal Protection of New Mexico is offering up to $5,000 to find those who left the elderly, white miniature poodle in a trash bag along the side of the road on the West Mesa last month. After multiple medical procedures, the dog eventually had to be euthanized due to the severity of his injuries.

A separate Albuquerque Metro Area Crime Stoppers release came with a photo of Milagro, a fluffy pup with big eyes, and also offered a reward.

Milagro was found “barely alive” on Jan. 19 near the junction of Amole Mesa Avenue and 118th SW on the far West Side of town, according to the Animal Protection of New Mexico release. The person who found him brought the dog to Animal Welfare’s West Side shelter.

“After days of examinations, treatment, and surgery to remove a foreign object from his stomach, Milagro was still suffering and in decline, so shelter staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize,” the release said.

An Animal Protection cruelty case manager, who is unnamed in the release, said the person responsible for “this cruel and senseless crime constitutes a danger to the community.”

“They could have surrendered Milagro to one of the Albuquerque shelters instead of abandoning him in this way,” the case manager said.

The release states that extreme animal cruelty is a fourth-degree felony and information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible will be rewarded up to $5,000.
