UNM CAN ONLY do so much to make up the budget deficit they are facing as the fiscal year winds down. Where other states have rich alumni that support their respective athletic departments, New Mexico is one of the poorest states in the country. Even if the Lobos had a highly successful athletic programs, the largess from private donors would still be lacking. I think the current athletic director is doing the best he can to effectively manage the budget, but without alumni and public sector support, his options are circumscribed.

IT DOESN’T MATTER if UNM athletics is in the red, they’ll get bailed out. You know it, I know it and the UNM administration knows it.

WHEN THIS Lobo basketball season is over and done, I think what will bother me the most is not being able to give senior Makuach Maluach a proper send-off from the Pit. He has been a pleasure to watch over the past 4 years. Hate to see him go out without any fanfare. Of course there is the possibility he may opt to play one more year since the NCAA has ruled this past year will not count as a year of eligibility. We can only hope.

I NEVER THOUGHT I’d see the day when the Lobos would be losing MWC games by high double digit numbers. Unfortunately, most of the games are on national TV. Many from around the country are asking “what’s up with New Mexico?” Even though dealt a brutal hand from Santa Fe, the reality is that UNM is going to battle Air Force for last place in the conference. No coach being paid approximately $700K per year is going to resign, but Garnett and Eddie, will Lobo fans come back next season for an in-person round of this?

COMMISSIONER GOODELL: It’s unfair that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers got home-field advantage in the Super Bowl. To ensure this never happens again, please hold all future Super Bowls in Dallas.

IN WHAT LOCKER ROOM have the APS Director of Athletics and all the APS athletic directors been hiding during COVID-19? How can the APS Board and the Governor be so clueless when it comes high school sports and student mental health? ADs you have nothing else to do but lobby these cavalier “leaders.” My teachers may be afraid of the classroom, but my coach and every coach I know is dying to get our teams back on the field to compete.
