Aggies volleyball rallies for 25th consecutive victory
In a rematch of the 2019 WAC championship, the New Mexico State volleyball team rallied back after dropping the opening set for a 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-20) conference win over Grand Canyon at UTEP’s Memorial Gym in El Paso.
The win is the program’s 25th straight conference victory.
“We were a little shell shocked early on,” said head coach Mike Jordan, who won his 498th match. “As the match went on, we did a better job setting where we needed to.”
GCU (4-1, 4-1) followed the opening set win with an 18-12 lead in the second set before the Aggies stormed back.
NMSU (5-0, 5-0 WAC) hit .255 with 55 kills while holding GCU to .139 hitting.
Savannah Davison smashed 15 kills with just one error for a .389 hitting percentage and also notched 14 digs for her second double-double of the season.
The two teams play again Tuesday at noon.
UNM GOLF: In Las Vegas, Nev., the Lobos women’s golf team finished Monday’s opening round of the 13-team Rebel Beach Invitational tied for third.
Three Lobos — Jenny Lertsadwattana (-1), Myah McDonald (+1) and Caroline Jansson (+2) — were in the top 20 after Round 1, though McDonald is competing as an individual in the event and not part of the five scoring players for the team competition.
NMSU SOFTBALL: In Leesburg, Fla., the Aggies fell in both games of a double header (7-2, 11-2) to Liberty.
NMSU’s Ramsay Lopez from Eldorado High School homered in the first inning of Game 2, her second of the season.
The Aggies play No. 21 Central Florida in a three game series starting Friday.
