- JOURNAL STAFF AND WIRES

Four former New Mexico State Aggie greats — Shirley Anku (women’s track & field), Simone Bock (women’s tennis), Neil McCarthy (men’s basketball head coach) and Amber Simpson (volleyball) — are set to be the latest group of individuals inducted into the NM State Athletics Hall of Fame as its 2021 class, it was announced Thursday.

Those four individuals are set to be formally inducted via a virtual induction ceremony. The date and time for that ceremony will be announced at a later date.

“It’s unfortunate that we won’t be able to hold an in-person induction ceremony due to COVID-19,” said NMSU athletic director Mario Moccia, “but it was important to us to keep one of NM State’s best traditions alive in order to honor some of our best and brightest.”

NMSU SOFTBALL: The Aggies are in Orlando, Fla., to begin a three-game series Friday against No. 24 Central Florida.

NMSU BASEBALL: As a result of positive COVID-19 tests within the Aggies’ tier one group, the season-opening series at UNLV originally scheduled for Friday-Sunday has been canceled. The Aggies hope to resume play Feb. 26 at Abilene Christian.
