Lobos edge Kansas State for first victory of season

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Cole Posey raced home from second base on Mack Chambers’ infield hit in the bottom of the ninth to give the University of New Mexico baseball team a 4-3 victory over Kansas State in the College Baseball Classic on Sunday night.

Posey, who reached on a walk and was sacrificed to second, never stopped on Chambers’ ground ball to second and an errant throw home capped the walk-off win for UNM (1-2).

Jared Martin went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and an RBI single for the Lobos, who scored twice in the eighth inning to tie the score. UNM pitchers Tristin Lively, Terrell Hudson and Bobby Meza (1-0) combined on a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts.

Connor McCullough pitched seven innings, allowing one run with nine strikeouts for Kansas State (0-1).

UNM faces Oregon State at 3 p.m. on Monday to conclude the tournament.

SOFTBALL: In Tucson, Ariz., UNM lost its final two games of the Hillenbran­d Invitation­al, falling to Seattle 9-5 and to Southern Utah 4-1.

La Cueva graduate Andrea Howard led the Lobos (1-5) offensivel­y, going 3-for-6 in the two games with a home run, a double and four RBIs.
