No spectators allowed at Mountain West tourneys

Due to the coronavirus, and uncertainties, MW will restrict entry to event

The Mountain West Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, scheduled for March 7-13 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, will be conducted without spectators, the MWC announced on Monday.

The MWC said in a release: while sensitive to the desire to allow family and friends of the student-athletes, as well as additional fans, the overriding factor became the health and well-being of the tournament participants. Given new information regarding variants of the coronavirus and the uncertainties involved, this is the most prudent course of action to mitigate risk to the most significant degree possible.

The Mountain West will restrict entry to the Thomas & Mack Center to participating teams, game officials, tournament staff, TV partners, limited credentialed media and other support personnel included on the team’s official pass list.

The Mountain West Network will live stream every women’s game from the tournament beginning March 7. On March 10, the championship final will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

The men’s first-round contests begin March 10, and will be lived streamed on the Mountain West

Network. CBS Sports Network will televise the quarterfinals and semifinals on March 11 and March 12, while the men’s championship final will air on CBS on March 13.

Baseball Lobos fall to Beavers

SURPRISE, Ariz. — The University of New Mexico baseball team lost to Oregon State for the second time, 5-2, to close out the College Baseball Classic on Monday.

Willie Cano and Shane Podsednik both went 2-for-2 for the Lobos (1-3). Cano added an RBI, as did Chase Weissenborn.

UNM lost to Oregon State, 14-1, on Saturday.

The Lobos are scheduled to play a three-game series against Air Force, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon in Amarillo.

Tennis

The UNM women’s team dropped its first match of the season, losing to Texas Tech, 4-0, in Lubbock, Texas.

The Lobos (3-1) will head to El Paso for a few nights before taking on UTEP on Wednesday and then rival New Mexico State on Thursday at UTEP.

MEN: UNM announced the signing of Joel Pierleoni of Great Britain. The 6-foot-3 Pierleoni adds another lefty to the Lobos. His highest ITF Junior World Ranking is 157 and his UTR high ranking was 12.47.
