Let subs help us reopen schools

-

ONE LOGISTICAL hurdle to opening schools is lack of available substitute teachers. When there are no subs, a teacher in quarantine means the whole class must stay home.

Let’s attack this problem with a statewide “Call to Sub” that comes with free registration, free background check and an incentive for employers to give employees a day or two off per month to go become a substitute . ... We could think of it as a civic responsibility. This would probably only work for employees who already possess some of the credentials, such as already have the necessary diplomas or credits . ... This could apply to unemployed folks, too, and all the better to enable everyone to receive a paycheck in these trying times.

I don’t see the lack of substitutes as a problem so large we can’t overcome it. I might go out and sub and just see what it’s all about, especially if it means some kids hear a book, or practice some algebra or just get to see their friends in person that day . ... MARISSA ISAAK WALD
