Lobos rally, edge Aggies in tennis

EL PASO — Yue Lin Che of Yunlin, Taiwan fought off a firstset deficit to beat New Mexico State’s Chloe Gavino 2-6, 7-5 7-5 and give New Mexico a 4-3 win in women’s tennis Thursday.

The match was played at El Paso Swim and Tennis Center due to public health restrictio­ns in Las Cruces.

UNM (4-1) and NMSU (0-4) stay in El Paso to play Friday, the Lobos facing UT San Antonio and the Aggies battling Seward County CC.

UNM MEN’S TENNIS: In Tempe, Ariz., 8-0 Oregon’s point in doubles was the difference in a 4-3 win over the Lobos (2-2). UNM stays in Tempe for a Saturday match vs. Arizona State.

NMSU BASEBALL: Year two of the Mike Kirby coaching era is set to begin Friday as New Mexico State opens the season at Abilene Christian. COVID issues within the Aggies program kept them from starting last week at UNLV as scheduled.

NMSU GOLF: The Aggie women open their season Friday at at the Moorpark Intercolle­giate in Moorpark, Calif. Set to start for coach Danny Bowen’s squad are Pun Chanachai, Karen Miyamoto, Alison Gastelum, Amelia McKee, Arantza Armas Stenner and Alex Quihuis.

NMSU WOMEN’S SOCCER:

In Herriman, Utah, Utah Valley (3-3-1) defeated the Aggies 1-0. NMSU is 2-4.
