Maria Flora Emerson
Maria Flora Lucero Emerson entered into eternal life on June 26, 2021 at her home in Grants. Born May 24, 1936 in Villanueva NM, Flora was the second born of eight children to Demetrio and Dolores Lucero. She was always the bossy child who took care of everyone and made sure her 7 siblings and parents had what they needed. This was the beginning of her lifelong dedication to serving the Lord.
She didn’t wait for things to get done; she simply did them herself. (Impatience was her only vice.) She started her first business, Flora’s Beauty Shop, at 21 and kept a full appointment book for 40 years. Flora had a mutual love for her customers and longtime employees. She opened Tres Marias Bakery with her three sisters in 1979 where they laughed and baked day and night. Most days you could find Flora at St. Vincent de Paul Society packing food, changing beds and helping people. People learned to seek her out for her care, generosity, and advice so she always had a busy full house. Flora also served Casa San Jose, a home for unwed mothers. She spent her free time making sure these soon-to-be mothers had the tools needed to be good moms, but she also did things with them to give joy in this hard time in their lives, like mountain walks and picnics. Flora was an artist who gathered friends for painting events in the yard. Even with all that activity, she still made time to share love (and lectures) daily with her big extended family in Grants. She cooked dinner on high heat and only “rested her eyes” till her last days.
Flora leaves behind her husband Frank of 60 years, a man who appreciated her independence, her sense of humor and working spirit. She was on the receiving end of his gentle and loving care when she needed it most. They have 4 children (Dempsey, Steven, Jennifer, Denise and their spouses), 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Her surviving siblings are Cecilia Price, Lucy Marez, Toby Lucero, Lupe Garcia. Flora is preceded in death by her parents and 3 brothers, Jimmy, Lawrence and Alfonsito.
Flora spent over 70 years in prayer and service at St. Teresa de Avila church in Grants and this will be the site of her funeral rosary at 9:30 a.m. followed by the mass at 10:00 on July 1st.
