Ohtani adds to HR total

Pirates end Brewers’ 11-game win streak

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Shohei Ohtani hit his major leaguelead­ing 31st homer in the third, and Juan Lagares ended it with a two-run double in the ninth inning of the Los Angeles Angels’ 6-5 comeback victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.

Ohtani tied the MLB record for the most homers in a season by a Japanese-born player when he blasted a 459-foot solo shot off Thomas Eshelman to straightaw­ay center. It was his 14th homer in 17 games overall.

GIANTS 5, DIAMONDBAC­KS 2: In Phoenix, Anthony DeSclafani threw 8⅔ effective innings, Austin Slater and Darin Ruf both homered and San Francisco won its third straight.

There was also bad news for the Giants as All-Star catcher Buster Posey left the game with a left thumb contusion. The team said X-rays were negative.

PIRATES 2, BREWERS 0: In Pittsburgh, Tyler Anderson pitched seven sparkling innings, and Pittsburgh snapped Milwaukee’s 11-game winning streak.

Kevin Newman homered and Wilmer Difo had an RBI double as the Pirates stopped a six-game slide.

METS 10-2, YANKEES 5-4: In New York, Gio Urshela hit a three-run homer and the Yankees avoided a Subway Series sweep.

In the opener of the split doublehead­er, Pete Alonso hit a tying home run off imploding Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman (5-3) leading off the seventh inning and José Peraza had a go-ahead, two-run double that included interferen­ce from a visiting fan in the Bronx.

RED SOX 1, ATHLETICS 0: In Oakland, Calif., Nick Pivetta struck out 10 over seven innings, and Boston went ahead on a double-play groundout by Rafael Devers in the sixth.

BRAVES 8, MARLINS 7 (10 inn.): In Atlanta, pinch-hitting pitcher Max Fried lined a basesloade­d single in the 10th inning, lifting Atlanta to a wild comeback victory.

Fried was called on to hit with the Braves out of position players after a four-run rally in the ninth. He singled on a 3-1 pitch off Anthony Bass (1-4), driving in Dansby Swanson.

MARINERS 4, RANGERS 1: In Seattle, Chris Flexen pitched six effective innings for the Mariners, and Luis Torrens homered for the seventh time in his past 13 games.

RAYS 5, BLUE JAYS 1: In Buffalo, N.Y., Austin Meadows had three hits, including two RBI doubles, and the Rays ended their 10-game road losing streak.

Wander Franco hit his second homer for Tampa Bay, which had dropped five in a row.

DODGERS 5, NATIONALS 1: In Washington, Albert Pujols hit a go-ahead single as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning, and Los Angeles completed a seven-game season sweep of the Nationals.

Los Angeles has won a season-high nine straight games since getting no-hit on June 24 by the Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers improved to a season-best 22 games over .500 at 53-31 following a four-game sweep.

PADRES 11, PHILLIES 1: In Philadelph­ia, Manny Machado drove in five runs with a pair of homers, leading San Diego to the victory.

The Padres stopped a threegame losing streak.

REDS 3, CUBS 2: In Cincinnati, Amir Garrett escaped a jam in the ninth inning, and the Reds handed Chicago its ninth straight loss.

ASTROS 4, INDIANS 3 (10 inn.): In Cleveland, Yuli Gurriel scored on a two-out error by pitcher Emmanuel Clase in the 10th inning, helping Houston complete a four-game sweep.

TIGERS 6, WHITE SOX 5: In Detroit, Jeimer Candelario had three hits, Akil Baddoo drove in two runs and the Tigers held on for the victory.

Detroit won the final two games of the series for its first series win over Chicago since Sept. 3-5, 2018.

ROCKIES 3, CARDINALS 2: In Denver, Elías Díaz hit an RBI single for Colorado with two out in the ninth inning, and Germán Márquez struck out 11 and was picked for his first All-Star team.

TWINS 6, ROYALS 2: In Kansas City, Mo., Kenta Maeda struck out a season-best 10 in six scoreless innings, and Minnesota halted a five-game losing streak.

Maeda (4-3) gave up two hits and a walk.
