Oñate baseball coach steps down
LAS CRUCES — David Reyes has retired after 16 years as head baseball coach at Oñate High, now Organ Mountain High School.
The Knights just won their first district championship since 2015 and stunned topseeded Rio Rancho 1-0 in the state quarterfinals. It was the school’s first Final Four appearance since 2001.
“I could have retired last year but I didn’t want to leave my kids during COVID,” Reyes told the Sun-News. “… It’s a positive decision for my family. I filled out my retirement papers before the season, so I was blessed that we had the type of season we had.”
Reyes was 248-168-2 as a head coach with the Knights.
