Congress needs to fight gender violence
I AM writing today to urge everyone to contact their representatives and have them support U.S. House Resolution 507 condemning the rise in hate against the transgender and nonbinary community.
Violence against the transgender and nonbinary community has been at an alltime high. The Human Rights Campaign declared 2020 the deadliest year on record for transgender and nonbinary people. There are 250 bills discriminating against the trans and nonbinary people in Congress currently.
It is incredibly important that those who care urge and educate their representatives to do the same for trans and nonbinary people. No one should be afraid to go out because of their gender expression. The House of Representatives currently has a chance to say that it agrees and take steps to begin protecting these people.
I also hope that in educating their representatives, people also learn a thing or two themselves about the many kinds of discrimination that trans and nonbinary people face. Hopefully they will not only help their representatives become better advocates for this community but learn how to do so themselves.
The trans and nonbinary community needs to know that not everyone supports discrimination against them and that there are people out there who want them to feel safe and welcomed in their communities. I urge representatives and the public alike to act in support of the trans and nonbinary community before it is too late.
