Open govt. award nominations sought

Period for submitting names closes on July 31

- JOURNAL STAFF REPORT

The New Mexico Foundation for Open Government has opened the nomination period for the 2021 William S. Dixon First Amendment Freedom Awards.

The honor is given annually to individuals or organizations that believe in government transparency and those who have made significant contributions to casting sunshine or transparency on government operations in the state, organizers said in a news release.

The deadline for nominations is July 31.

Multiple recipients are expected.

They will be picked by a panel of FOG directors. Dixon Award winners will be announced in September with a virtual award event set for Oct. 7.

“The Dixon awards bring attention to and celebrate those individuals who advance the cause of open government in New Mexico,” Kathi Bearden, FOG Dixon Award committee chair, said in a statement. “It’s important, especially as we come out of what can only be classified as unusual times, to recognize and honor the dedicated New Mexicans who represent open government in action.”

The award is named for the late William S. Dixon, a First Amendment advocate and FOG co-founder.

To nominate an individual or organization, visit the FOG website at nmfog.org/events for requirements.
