Son of three-time Lobo All-American in City tourney
Herron is incoming UNM freshman
Carson Herron found a perfect way to settle into Albuquerque as an incoming freshman on the University
of New Mexico men’s golf team. He’s going to play in the 80th Albuquerque Men’s City Championship Friday at Ladera, Saturday at Arroyo del Oso and Sunday at Los Altos.
Herron is no stranger to UNM. His father, Tim, was a three-time All-American for the Lobos and graduated from UNM in 1993 before going on to play on the PGA Tour for 25 years and collecting four PGA Tour wins.
Last week, Carson Herron and his father drove from their home in Minnesota to bring his car to Albuquerque.
“We went from Minnesota, through Iowa, Nebraska and Colorado and then to Albuquerque,” the younger Herron said. “That was our last father-and-son trip together before college and it was really cool to spend all that time with him.”
While Herron tees it up in the City, his father will be playing on the Champions
Tour in the Boeing Classic at the Club of Snoqualmie Ridge in Washington.
Carson Herron, a five-year letterman who finished seventh in the state tournament for Minnetonka High School this past season, said he found the right fit at UNM.
“My dad is excited,” Herron said. “It’s like following in his footsteps. I’m pretty excited, too. I think New Mexico will be really good for me.”
Herron has not played on the municipal courses in Albuquerque. He has played at UNM South, The Canyon Club and Albuquerque Country Club, he said. He plans to play a practice round at Arroyo del Oso on Thursday.
Some of his Lobo teammates will play in the City, as well, including senior Brandon Shong and redshirt freshman Alexandre Bauduin.
Ross Sinclair, a former Lobo and the City’s defending champion, is not entered in the event. He said he had planned to go on a backpacking trip instead.
Aiden Krafft, the senior standout from Cibola High, and Albuquerque Academy’s Neil Parasher are in the field of 22 in the championship flight, tournament director David Muttitt said.
He said 98 golfers have entered the event, a bit down from last year.
