THE POWER OF THE DOG ★★★1/2
Drama, R, 126 minutes, 2021
In one of his most interesting and layered performances, Benedict Cumberbatch stars as a hard-edged cowboy terrorizing the bride (Kirsten Dunst) his brother brings home. Director Jane Campion’s dark, brooding film is a study in contrasts between the beauty of the surroundings and the nasty, petty and often unspeakably harsh manner in which people will treat one another.

BRUISED ★★1/2 Drama, R, 129 minutes, 2021
For her directorial debut, Halle Berry chose a script that’s far too predictable, and filled with borderline corny dialogue and obvious symbolism. She’s also the star and delivers a no-frills, authentic and moving performance as a disgraced UFC fighter given the obligatory One Last Shot at Redemption.

RED NOTICE
★★
Action thriller, PG-13, 117 minutes, 2021
Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds star in a high-octane heist thriller so filled with cliches and winking nods to the viewer, it feels as if we’re about two rewrites away from this thing being a flat-out spoof. The story takes one twist and turn after another, none of them particularly clever.

LAST NIGHT IN SOHO ★★★1/2
Horror mystery, R, 116 minutes, 2021
A London design student (Thomasin McKenzie) finds herself transported to the swinging mid-’60s, where she becomes a sort of twin to an aspiring singer (Anya Taylor-Joy). Edgar Wright’s piercingly effective, wonderfully disturbing love letter to the fashions and sights and sounds of the era is one of the most unusual and exciting movies of the year.
