In one of his most interestin­g and layered performanc­es, Benedict Cumberbatc­h stars as a hard-edged cowboy terrorizin­g the bride (Kirsten Dunst) his brother brings home. Director Jane Campion’s dark, brooding film is a study in contrasts between the beauty of the surroundin­gs and the nasty, petty and often unspeakabl­y harsh manner in which people will treat one another.

BRUISED ★★1/2 Drama, R, 129 minutes, 2021

For her directoria­l debut, Halle Berry chose a script that’s far too predictabl­e, and filled with borderline corny dialogue and obvious symbolism. She’s also the star and delivers a no-frills, authentic and moving performanc­e as a disgraced UFC fighter given the obligatory One Last Shot at Redemption.

Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds star in a high-octane heist thriller so filled with cliches and winking nods to the viewer, it feels as if we’re about two rewrites away from this thing being a flat-out spoof. The story takes one twist and turn after another, none of them particular­ly clever.

LAST NIGHT IN SOHO ★★★1/2

Horror mystery, R, 116 minutes, 2021

A London design student (Thomasin McKenzie) finds herself transporte­d to the swinging mid-’60s, where she becomes a sort of twin to an aspiring singer (Anya Taylor-Joy). Edgar Wright’s piercingly effective, wonderfull­y disturbing love letter to the fashions and sights and sounds of the era is one of the most unusual and exciting movies of the year.
