A good day for Alabama: Gonzaga falls

Villanova beats Big Five rival St. Joe’s

SEATTLE — Jaden Shackelfor­d scored 20 of his 28 points in the first half, Jahvon Quinerly and JD Davison both hit key 3-pointers later, and No. 16 Alabama held off Gonzaga’s big second-half rally for a 91-82 win over the third-ranked Bulldogs.

The Crimson Tide (7-1) made 10 of its 13 3-pointers in the first half, led by Shackelfor­d’s sharp shooting from deep. Alabama led by 16 at halftime and withstood every charge the Bulldogs made in the second half to hand Gonzaga its second loss in three games.

NO. 6 VILLANOVA 81, SAINT JOSEPH’S 51: In Villanova, Pa., Collin Gillespie scored 23 points to lead the Wildcats past Saint Joseph’s.

Justin Moore added 16 points and Eric Dixon had 12 for the Wildcats (6-2), who won their 10th straight in a series dating to 1921 between the Big Five rivals that are separated by just seven miles.

NO. 4 BAYLOR 99, ARKANSASPI­NE BLUFF 54: In Waco, Texas, LJ Cryer led five players in double figures with his 20 points, and the Bears (8-0) beat ArkansasPi­ne Bluff.

NO. 10 ARKANSAS 93, LITTLE ROCK 78: In Fayettevil­le, Arkansas, Au’Diese Toney and JD Notae had 18 points each to lift the Razorbacks (8-0) past Little Rock (4-5).

NO. 12 BYU 74, MISSOURI STATE 68: In Springfiel­d, Mo., Alex Barcello scored 21 points, Te’Jon Lucas added 17 and the Cougars (7-1) pulled away in the final 90 seconds to defeat the Bears.

NO. 13 TENNESSEE 69, COLORADO 54: In Boulder, Colo., freshman Kennedy Chandler scored 16 of his season-high 28 points in the first half and the Volunteers (6-1) pulled away from the Buffaloes.

NO. 17 UCONN 88, GRAMBLING STATE 59: In Storrs, Conn., R.J. Cole scored 18 points to help the Huskies (8-1), playing without two injured starters, rout the Tigers (3-6).

MISSISSIPP­I 67, NO. 18 MEMPHIS 63: In Oxford, Miss., Jarkel Joyner scored 20 points and the Rebels (6-2) converted 10 of 11 free throws in the final four minutes to defeat the Tigers (5-3).

NO. 19 IOWA STATE 64, CREIGHTON 58: In Omaha, Neb., Caleb Grill scored a season-high 16 points, Izaiah Brockingto­n had all 12 of his points in the second half and the Cyclones (8-0) stayed unbeaten with a grinding victory over the Bluejays (7-2).

NO. 20 USC 63, WASHINGTON STATE 61: In Pullman, Wash., Chevez Goodwin sank a layup and the free throw with 16 seconds left to lift the undefeated Trojans (8-0, 2-0 Pac-12) over the Cougars (6-2, 1-1).

NO. 21 AUBURN 86, YALE 64: In Auburn, Ala., K.D. Johnson scored 19 points, Jabari Smith added 17 points and seven rebounds and the Tigers (7-1) blew past the Bulldogs (5-5).

NO. 22 MICHIGAN STATE 81, TOLEDO 68: In East Lansing, Mich., Max Christie had 14 points, Gabe Brown scored 12 and the Spartans (7-2) built a big lead early to beat Toledo.

N0. 23 WISCONSIN 89, MARQUETTE 76: In Madison, Wis., Johnny Davis scored 25 points to lead four Wisconsin players in double figures as the Badgers (7-1) downed in-state rival Marquette.

N0. 24 MICHIGAN 72, SAN DIEGO STATE 58: In Ann Arbor, Mich., Hunter Dickinson had 23 points and 14 rebounds, freshman Caleb Houstan scored a season-high 17 points and the Wolverines (5-3) beat the Aztecs (5-3).

The Aztecs were led by Matt Bradley, who scored 22 points.

N0. 25 SETON HALL 113, NYACK 67: In South Orange, N.J., Seton Hall had a trio come off the bench and combine for 66 points, leading the Pirates (7-1) over Division II Nyack.

WYOMING 79, MCNEESE STATE 58: In Laramie, Wyo., Hunter Maldonado had 20 points as Wyoming won its eighth consecutiv­e game to open the season, routing McNeese.

COLORADO STATE 74, SAINT MARY’S 58: In Fort Collins, Colo., David Roddy registered 19 points and seven rebounds as the Rams won their ninth straight game to start the season, beating the Gaels.

AIR FORCE 76, ARMY 58: In Colorado Springs, A.J. Walker scored 23 points and the Falcons (7-1) won their seventh consecutiv­e game, defeating Army (4-4).

FRESNO STATE 61, CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE 43: In Fresno, Calif., Orlando Robinson had 22 points as the Bulldogs (7-1) got past the Matadors (3-4).

Deon Stroud had 14 points for Fresno State (7-1), which earned its fifth consecutiv­e home victory.

USF 83, UNLV 62: In San Francisco, Jamaree Buoyea’s 30 points paced the Dons (9-0) to a win over the Runnin’ Rebels (4-5). Bryce Hamilton had 25 points for UNLV.

WEST TEXAS A&M 73, WNMU 70: In Canyon, Texas, a late Western New Mexico rally fell short as the Buffaloes (10-1) edged the Mustangs (5-2).

Tony Avalos led WNMU with 17 points.

CSU-PUEBLO 68, NMHU 65: In Pueblo, Colo., the Thunderwol­ves (4-4, 1-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic) outscored the Cowboys (5-3, 0-2) down the stretch.

Andre Adams led Highlands with 16 points.

Women

BAYLOR 70, MISSOURI 68: In Waco, Texas, NaLyssa Smith had her eighth consecutiv­e double-double with 25 points and 17 rebounds, and the fifth-ranked Bears (8-1) handed the Tigers (8-1) their first loss of the season in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

NO. 21 BYU 85, UTAH 80: In Salt Lake City, Paisley Harding scored a career-high 33 points on 14-of-20 shooting, Shaylee Gonzalez added 22 points and seven assists, and the Cougars (8-0) beat the Utes (6-2), their intrastate rival.

WEST TEXAS A&M 74, WNMU 47: In Canyon, Texas, the Buffaloes (6-5) routed the Mustangs (3-2). Olivia Lee led Western with 13 points.

CSU-PUEBLO 68, NMHU 55: In Pueblo, Colo., Jordyn Lewis scored 21 points in a losing cause as the Thunderwol­ves (6-1, 2-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic) downed the Cowgirls (3-5, 0-2).
