Joyce C. Butler

Passed away at age of 90 from heart failure, in Albuquerqu­e,

NM on 3/1/2022. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, she was a graduate of Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame cum laude and The Art Institute of Cincinnati 1st in her class. She met her husband Wycliffe at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Joyce worked as a commercial artist and Illustrato­r with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at Kirtland Air Force Base. Joyce was the president of American Business Women’s Associatio­n and Woman of the Year. Joyce raised two children, Renee Butler-Lewis M.D. and Stewart Butler JD. Joyce and Wyc played tennis at Four Hills and Tanoan Country Clubs and attended church at the Aquinas Newman Center. Joyce and Wyc operated “Joyce of Hawaii” a women’s dress shop in Winrock in the 1980’s and were members of the NM Advertisin­g Federation. Joyce exhibited her artwork in national, regional and local juried exhibition­s, and was a featured gallery portrait painter. Joyce was a member of the NM Art League, NM Watercolor Society, and Kentucky Watercolor Society. Joyce loved painting, sketching, tap, jazz, ballet dancing, gymnastics, tennis, skiing, and spending time with her two grandsons. She is preceded in death by her husband, Wycliffe V. Butler, her parents Bertha Mae and Virgil Skaggs and her sister Phyllis Joan Skaggs. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Renee Butler-Lewis, her spouse Janine Brunjes; grandsons, Erik Lewis and Jeffery Lewis; Joyce’s son, Stewart Butler, Esq., his wife Tammy Butler PharmD and her daughter, Mariah Jassmann. Joyce will be interred at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, her husband Wyc, a former Air Force Veteran. Services are scheduled for Tuesday May 10th at 3 pm. Joyce’s artwork can be found at Jaramillo Vineyards Tasting Room in Belen.
