SERENDIPITOUS ENCOUNTERS

Colorado-based band Stone Riot will make its ABQ debut at Launchpad

Though Robson Guy moved to Colorado, he knew that music would always bring him back to New Mexico. Guy will return to Albuquerque for a show at Launchpad on Thursday, Feb. 8, with his new band Stone Riot.

Joining Guy on stage is Christina Wienke, Cole Dolph and Britton Barrett.

Guy says sometimes the universe puts people in each other’s path for a reason and that his how the band formed.

“Cole and Christina crossed paths while traveling through Asheville, North Carolina,” Guy says.

Following suit, the duo met the other two members of Stone Riot through serendipitous encounters. Barrett met the duo while playing the marimba at an open mic. Guy met the pair in Albuquerque when they performed a show with his band L’uomo Nero.

Guy says the band is working on new material.

Stone Riot unveiled some of the music during a short tour in Mexico, recently.

“We’ve been crafting some new songs not yet available for purchase or streaming that we can’t wait to play live for new listeners,” Guy says. “Hearing our tracks on your phone or in your car is one thing, but experiencing the live show and the environment we create is something totally different. Our set will certainly be specially planned and thought out, but it will be a reflection of the listeners as to the energy we will all able to create together.”

When it comes to the vibe of the band, Guy says each musician has their own influences.

Wienke is the most classically trained out of the members as she began playing woodwinds at the age of eight and carried on through college.

Meanwhile, Dolph appreciates the heavysludgy guitars of the ’70s,’80s and’90s. “Tony Iommi and John Frusciante are some of his faves,” Guy says. “I’m probably most influenced by grunge and metal. Some Primus and Rage Against the Machine definitely comes out in my playing, but also Sade and Jaco Pastorius.”

Barrett also studied percussion in college, Guy says.

“An undeniable, unique Latin flair (from his blood) definitely comes out when he is rocking behind the drum set,” he says.

Stone Riot will also perform at Mine Shaft Tavern in Madrid at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11.
