TOP OF MIND

-

Top of Mind is a weekly question about an issue affecting New Mexicans.

LAST WEEK’S QUESTION

What do you think about proposed rules prohibiting alcohol consumption before legislative meetings?

“The proposal to restrict alcohol use by legislators during the session is laughable and insulting. Is there truly any evidence of a problem during session showing that alcohol use adversely impacts the conduct of business, or is it just a perception? Seems to me that the work gets done.”

— Ricardo Flores, Albuquerque

“I agree with the proposed rule. It is outrageous that alcohol is allowed in our government buildings. This is where the people’s business is being conducted. The citizens of New Mexico deserve legislators that are not under the influence of any intoxicating drug. Say no to drugs or hangovers on the job.”

— Mary Hernandez, Bernalillo

“Who will monitor this? Legislators should exercise independence and discretion, but the sergeant at arms has better things to do than offer breathalyzer exams before each session.”

— Mark C. Abramson, Los Ranchos

“This proposal is a no-brainer. No one conducting business should be indulging in alcohol during or before work. There is time to indulge, if desired, after work is complete. Most of us, in any work requiring a clear mind, would be reprimanded or fired for such behavior.

— Lynne Ortiz, Albuquerque

“Laws are like sausages, it is better not to see them being made,” is credited to Otto von Bismarck. I’ve been to many legislative meetings. Von Bismark is correct. Even drinking beforehand couldn’t affect the process much. It would be embarrassing if we require sobriety testing prior to meetings.”

— Jon Hill, Las Cruces

“Fine. How will an offender be identified? Who is going to enforce the rule prohibiting alcohol consumption? What is the penalty?”

— Walter Bishop, Elephant Butte

“Of course there should be a rule prohibiting legislators from drinking before legislating. We don’t need drunks, altered judgment and alcohol-fueled generosity during legislative sessions. Anyone caught drinking should be kicked out of office.”

— Doug Vigil, Albuquerque

“I would not want my doctor to consume any amount of alcohol before a procedure of any kind. It could affect me for years to come. Legislators shouldn’t be allowed to consume alcohol either. There actions affect us for years to come. We need them to be as clear-headed as possible.”

— Joe Alexanian II, Albuquerque

“Only in N.M. would it be necessary to have to introduce legislation (by Sen. Harold Pope Jr.) requiring that our legislators show up for work sober. If that’s what it takes, then so be it. Isn’t this a ‘no-brainer?’”

— Robert Ferguson, Albuquerque
