George Scott Harrison

George Scott Harrison (Scott), 84, passed away at UNM Hospital the night of Dec. 7, 2022, soon after his 84th birthday. He was born in Hampton, VA, of Margaret Scott Harrison and the Reverend Carter Henry Harrison.

Scott has always been attracted to the American West and the Spanish Language, its people and cultures. He moved to New Mexico to finish college where he studied Spanish and Latin American Affairs at UNM in Albuquerqu­e. He spent summers in Mexico living in Mexican homes and studying Spanish. Following college he taught 6th grade students in Navajo, New Mexico. His love of travel, language, and culture led him to teach English as a Second Language in Guatemala; at the U.S. Binational Center in Valencia, Spain; and Taif, Saudi Arabia. On his return to the United States he became a liaison officer for the U.S. State Department in a program which invites American embassies around the world to identify promising midlevel people for in-depth visits to the United States. As a liaison officer, his job was to interpret the United States to the visitors. When he ended his career with the State Department he volunteere­d as a docent at the NM History Museum where he could use his interest in history and New Mexican culture to introduce visitors to New Mexico.

Scott is survived by his wife, Blanche, of 55 years; his daughter, Maria Elena Wolff; three grandchild­ren, Tommy, Max and Bella; a brother, Ben. He is also survived by two sistersin-law, Connie and Debbie; a brother-in-law, Robert Martindale; former wife Juanita Wolff; and many friends and cousins.

A remembranc­e for him will be held at the Pecos Trail Cafe, 2239 Old Pecos Trail, Santa Fe, NM, on March 18, 2023, at 2:00 p.m.
