Marina Oborotova

-

Multi-talented, cosmopolitan, and courageous, Marina Oborotova came to NM in 1992 invited by UNM to teach in the History and Political Science Departments. She had four careers during her life. She worked as a senior researcher at IMEMO – USSR’s leading think tank and as an Adjunct Professor at UNM. She was employed at the United States Industry Coalition, where she contributed to international efforts in the area of nuclear non-proliferation. Marina founded and for the last 18 years was the President of Center for International Studies and the Albuquerque International Association, organizations that brought the best experts of this country to our city to address critical issues facing our nation, state and city.

Marina was passionate about art. An artist herself, she painted in pastels, and her work won local and national competitions. She also travelled widely around the world and frequently served as a lecturer about art, history, politics and culture on international cruises. Her lectures displayed her enormous erudition and her vibrant sense of humor. Once after an on-board talk, her listeners showered her with compliments and one of them exclaimed: "And, by the way, you look exactly like a James Bond Girl!" Marina exploded with laughter. Turning to her son, who had accompanied her, she said: "I have never received a compliment like that. Don’t forget to put it into my obituary!"

Marina was a good friend with some of her friendship lasting for over 50 years, and a devoted mother. She is survived by her son Philip Skorokhodov and her Corgi, Ruzhik.
