Marvin Russell Teitelbaum, age
70, passed away March 21, 2022, at his home in Taylor Ranch, New Mexico after losing his battle with lung cancer. “Marvelous
Marv” was born August 16, 1952, in Brooklyn, New York, and was raised in Stafford County, Virginia. After attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, he moved to Portales, New Mexico where he earned a Bachelor of Musical Therapy degree (1977) and Master of Special Education degree (1979) at Eastern New Mexico University. Marvin dedicated his life to his love of music as a teacher of the developmentally disabled in New Mexico.
Marvin’s involvement in the music world enabled him to travel extensively, including participation in several USO tours to Germany, Greenland, Iceland and Korea with Chico International. He loved the beautiful sound of mariachi music and was the founder and director of the Mariachi Nuevo Sonido group, working with many New Mexico and Latin musicians. Marvin was known as “El Mariachi Gringo” and for several decades worked with the Mexican/ New Mexico Consulates to facilitate invitations to Mexican and Latin musicians to play
Mariachi music in the United States, with many of these musicians becoming US citizens. This group was famous internationally travelling throughout the United States and abroad playing their beautiful sound. Marvin’s other love was his dogs, his canine children, including the German shepherd Teddy, and shelties Chester and Abbey and three-legged Mike, a sheltie born without a right rear leg.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Bertha Teitelbaum, and is survived by his two sisters, Madelynn (married to Steve Ellis) and April (widow of Austin Bernstein).
It was Marvin’s wish to be cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Best Western Rio Grande Inn, Old Town Albuquerque, 1015 Rio Grande Boulevard, NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104 in the Wild Avocado Cork and Tap, Saturday, March 18, 2023, 1:004:00 pm.
